City to Pilot Reversible Lanes During Rush Hour
Once the reversible lanes was piloted on a section between Lianhua and Hongli Road the flow of traffic in Xinzhou raoud during rush hour improved by two thirds. The reversible lane or counter flow allowed traffic to travel in either direction depending on the current traffic condition in which overhead traffic lights and a lighted street sign notifies drivers on which lanes are closed and which lanes are open.
Traffic police said that Xinzhou Road is most suitable in piloting the reversible lanes as there are more than 3,400 southbound vehicles traveling per hour in the morning which is double the amount of northbound vehicles. Traffic police is assessing the results of the counter flow and will decide whether to implement a new road management system a first for the city. Jinan, Hangzhou and Beijing have already introduced reversible lanes and have improve traffic efficiency on certain roads.
Although not every road are suitable for reversible lanes, the new traffic method can be used after doing thorough test and studies. For two hours yesterday drivers were caught unaware when the rule was implemented, wherein the number of southbound lanes was expanded from six lanes to seven and traffic police has to set up signs that guided vehicles in entering the reversible lanes.
Two years ago the city traffic police have already started to test the feasibility of using reversible lanes on Meiguan Road during rush hour in which a temporary reversible lane was used and could be adjusted according to traffic conditions.
