New Drafted Regulations Seeking Public Opinion
The city is now asking for public opinion on the new drafted regulations that are aimed to improve the environment in the city. The drafted rule will cover various environmental issues ranging from the city’s ecological lines, genetically modified food, green buildings and other measures that will collect compensation for construction on the damages that will be done to the environment.
50 percent of the area in the city is designated within the ecological control lines that are under special protection since 2005 and these new rules will place several vulnerable areas and nature reserves under permanent protection and will ban all construction and development on these areas. Violators caught can face fines of up to 5 million yuan. These rules also place the restrictions on the production, use and sale of disposable plastic bags. Any plastic bags that are thinner than .025 millimeters are banned from being produced and used. Those caught using these banned plastic bags can be fined of up to 30,000 yuan.
To test and track genetically modified foods, the government will be creating a system that will evaluate GM foods in the city. Producers and sellers of GM foods need to register within the city food safety department and these genetically modified foods must be labeled properly or fines will be implemented which can reached up to 100,000 yuan.
