Live Poultry No Longer Sold on Wet Markets in Shenzhen
As of Thursday no live poultry were seen at farm produce markets in Futian as the city started to ban the sales of live poultry on a pilot basis since last month. Thursday marked the first day of making the sale of live poultry illegal and the start of slaughter poultry are the only one allowed to be sold.
All live poultry were slaughter and dipped in ice water and most of the slaughtered poultry were sold at 39 yuan per 500 grams. Residents who want to but live poultry must visit other districts to purchase some. The Futian Farm Produce Whole sale Market in Meilin didn’t sell any live poultry as well. market vendors say that the resident are starting to get used in buying these slaughtered poultry and those who still need live ones usually go out of the district and purchase in independent booths that are found outside of the market.
There are more than 400 booths that used to sell live poultry and the district is starting to transform these booths that can accommodate the sale of slaughtered and processed poultry. These booths should have an area of more than 5 square meters. Vendors of these transformed booths will be given subsidies.
The ban will be expanded further into the districts of Yantian, Louhu and Nanshan but no timetable is still released on when it will be implemented.
