More Residents Seeking Treatment at Community Health Centers
As of last year around a third of residents have receive medical treatments at the 609 community health centers in Shenzhen or 34 million patients which is over a third of the number of patients that are seen going to medical institutions. Average cost of going to this community health center was around 47 yuan which is 30 percent less of the city’s average
For the first five months of this year these community center have already seen 1.3 million patients a 2 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The city already have 7,772 medical practitioners working at these community center and 90 percent if these centers and 2,000 of these medical practitioners have signed contracts with local families and have offered them with comprehensive health services
The city still continues with its efforts in increasing the number of its general practitioners by offering training programs, and as of this year more than 250 doctors are enrolled in its training program the highest in recent years. Although even with the high number of practitioners community center in the city are still facing constraints such as converting a district or subdistrict level hospital into a community health center which is a common practice among other cities. Shenzhen opted to build every center since each center tends to differ in size and sufficiency of its equipment.
A fourth of the community health centers have an area of less than 400 square meters and two thirds are located in rental properties and 60 percent of these centers don’t even have the basic equipment. Municipal and district government are also increasing their support to these community center and each new center get a subsidy of 300,000 yuan upon its establishment.
