Tencent to Further Introduce WeChat Mobile App to the US Market
China’s most popular mobile messaging application WeChat is now converting thousands of students in the United States and help spread the usage of the popular app in the country. One example is a student who graduated last year from a State University introduced WeChat to his off campus church and now about 15 of his fellow members are now using WeChat in staying in touch with friends and to spread church events to the Chinese community in the area.
According to the director of international ministries for the University Reformed Church in East Lansing, Michigan said by using the mobile app WeChat has help him maintain personal communication with the international community and to stay in touch better. There are around 274,000 Chinese nationals that are studying in the United States with many of them hae become informal ambassadors for WeChat by introducing them to non Chinese friends which helped lay the ground work for Tencent to expand to the U.S.
WeChat grew to 468 million monthly users worldwide since its introduction in 2011, ad 3 million users in the United States. WeChat creates a fast track to connect students across the border as it provide them a more intimate and less formal way in connecting to one other. So far WeChat needs all it can to penetrate the US market wherein competition is high as consumers tend to use better known American messaging apps such as Whatsapp or SnapChat which is owned by Facebook which already have a half a billion users worldwide.
The US with its huge technology market remains a target for WeChat, and Tencent have already opened in Palo Alto California and has also established a project team to study the market.
