China to Become the Biggest Market of Daimler Smart Car
China could finally overtake Italy and Germany and become the largest market for Daimler AG mini car brand Smart in the next few years. As the company started a lot of people doubted that the Smart car can be a success since normally premium luxury cars in China focuses on big cars.
The premium car market is being dominated by German brands such as Mercedes Benz and Audi and is still showing signs of slowing but the sales of compact models are growing fast. The Smart car is competing with BMW’s Mini which sold more than 17,000 cars in China last year and is expected to hit a record sale this year with a slight growth. But Smart China head Daniel Lescow is expecting that sales will be picking up by next year as they will be launching a two seater and four seater in China.
In 2016 the company might be seeing a double digit growth as there is an increase in the number of rich Chinese people that are financially capable of buying a Smart car. And in a different area Daimler is also planning to bring in its car sharing service Car2go into China. By the end of 2013 the Car2go is already in use in 25 cities in Europe and North America.
