HouseKeeping Industry Sees a Increase in Demand as Most Help Leave for the Holidays
More than ten percent of domestic helpers in Shenzhen have left and gone back to their hometowns to celebrate the Spring Festival which left the housekeeping market in short supply. A majority of housekeepers left Shenzhen for the spring festival this end of January until mid February.
According to the biggest housekeeping service booking website Yunjiazheng.com which published data on the number of housekeepers in first tiered cities revealed that around 400,000 to 500,000 housekeepers are working in Shenzhen and around 60 percent of these workers will be leaving for their hometowns during the Spring Festival. Nannies that come from other parts of Guangdong and Guangxi the largest portion which h19.9 percent of house keepers will see 16.4 percent to go home for the Spring Festival. The report also shows that most of the housekeepers return to work by March.
Housekeepers who are willing to stay and work are getting paid higher than usual. And based on the data on the period of shortage the wage of a temporary housekeeper rise from 30 yuan per hour up to 45 yuan per hour. Long term ones will get an hourly wage rise from 20 to 25 yuan to 30 to 35 yuan. Working during Spring Festival doubles that into 50 to 60 yuan per hour.
Those who are willing to stay and work are expecting higher pay than usual. According to the data, within the period when the city is in a shortage, the wage of a temporary housekeeper will rise from 30 yuan (US$4.89) per hour to 45 yuan per hour, while long-term housekeepers’ hourly wages will rise from between 20 and 25 yuan to between 30 and 35 yuan. During the Spring Festival, hourly wages will be doubled to between 50 and 60 yuan per hour.
Housekeeping have been attracting an increasing number of graduates in the city since they earn more since 2010. Since the monthly wage of a postpartum caretaker is now at 8,433 yuan compared to 7,744 yuan last year. Experienced caretakers makes as much as 20,000 a month surpassing even most white collar salaries.
