China Marine Surveillance plan to construct a dock that to be used only as a base for public service ships is met with strong opposition from the residents in Nanshan along with the district government. The Shekou branch of China Marine Surveillance gave out questionnaires to seek public opinions about the project that will be located just east of the waters in Gupojiao in Dongjiaotou with an area of about 14,000 square meters.
The dock will have two berths for 2,000 ton law enforcement ships, a helicopter tarmac, wharf, two berths for 600 ton law enforcement ships, floating wharves for speed boats are all planned to be constructed at the base. The questionnaires handed out to residents living in three housing estates located near the project made preliminary assessments on the environmental impact of the project, stating that it will bring negative things such as emissions, noise, sewage and solid waste during its construction and operation.
Almost all residents have expressed their opposition on the project, one resident said that the maintenance and repair of the ships will produce large amount of oily wastewater and create safety risk on welding and cutting. Most residents agreed that these types of projects related to ship maintenance and repair must be placed far away from densely populated areas. the project will also coincide with the planned western section of the Shenzhen Bay Coastal Leisure Belt a coastal green corridor across Nanshan and Futian.
