Yantian’ao Tunnel is Last Tunnel to Discard Toll Fee
The city is planning to remove the toll for using the Yantian’ao Tunnel located on the Huiyan Expressway in Henggan after several rounds of compensation negotiations with its operator. The toll removal is expected to alleviate the operation costs for logistics companies. This means that container trucks going to Yantian Port will be saving 30 yuan. The one way toll fee through Yantian’ao Tunnel is also scrap.
The Yantian’ao Tunnel is the last tunnel in the city to be free of charge, and is considered one of the important passage that links Yantian Port with Shenzhen and other Pearl River Delta cities as thousand of container trucks pass through the tunnel every day. Local pricing authority has previously approved tollgate operations until 2021 after the tunnel completion in 1994, but the tollgate has been criticized for bottlenecking access to Yantian Port. Calls to scrap the tool fee became stronger after the government scrapped the toll at Wutongshan Tunnel in 2010.
Residents and political advisers in Yantian also called for the tollgate to be discarded are they saw an increase in the number of large trucks parking randomly between Yantian port and the tunnel in hopes to avoid payments. Once the toll is cancelled, these trucks can park at lots in Henggang after passing through the tunnel and is expected to improve parking difficulties in Yantian Port.
