Beijing Impresses Visiting IOC Committee Team
Beijing’s bid in hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics is in line with China’s regional development strategy impressed a visiting International Olympic committee team. And on Tuesday the Team evaluation Commission started a five day inspection tour in Beijing and Zhangjiakou to inspect possible venues and assess the abilities to jointly host the winter Olympics.
Chaired by Russian IOC member Alexander Zhukov, he said that the commission was impressed that Beijing’s bid has already incorporated some if the Olympics Agenda 2020 reforms in their games. Zhukov said that Beijing have maximized the use of existing world class sport venues which meant that Beijing maximized its knowledge in hosting major international events.
According to Beijing’s candidacy file that was submitted to the IOC in January, Beijing will fully use the legacy of the 2008 summer Olympics by using the existing venues in the downtown areas for most of the ice events and upgrade skiing resorts for snow sports if the bid goes successful. Six new venues which include an indoor speed skating rink in Beijing and a cross country skiing center in Chongli will be constructed under a budget of almost $2 billion dollars.
As China plans a strategy to integrate the development of Beijing, Hebei and Tianjin provinces, Beijing’s joint bid with Zhangjiakou will take advantage of the implementation and create long term legacy in return boost economic, ecological, social development in the region.
