Checkpoint Sees Record Number of Border Crossings for Qingming Festival
Based on official statistics Luohu checkpoints was the most used checkpoint which saw a record number of 361,000 border crossings yesterday. This was the second day of the ongoing Qingming festival and the second day of a five day holiday in Hong Kong which celebrated Qingming and Easter.
By 6:30 yesterday the checkpoint had more than 30,000 inbound travelers in two and a half hour double the number compared to an ordinary day. The inbound travelers are mostly Hong Kong and Macau residents that came to celebrate Qingming festival and to offer sacrifices to their ancestors in the mainland. To control the flow of travelers, police presence was increased in checkpoints that were doing manual inspections and more e-channels were open to help deal with the flow of travelers as well. these checkpoint is estimated to see more than one million travelers crossing within the three days.
Roadside spaces near Futian Checkpoint was used as temporary parking spaces for travel buses, also traffic police will be imposing the maximum penalty of 2,000 yuan to those caught parking illegally and causes traffic jams or accidents. Cross border travelers are asked to avoid peak hours when crossing which is from 8:3 am until 11:0 am.
