Poultry Sellers Fails to Store Slaughtered Poultry in Freezers or Refrigerators
Local wet market sellers have failed to store slaughtered poultry in refrigerators or freezers to ensure their freshness. Last April 1 a ban on the sale of live poultry that covered areas of Nanshan, Futian, Yantian and Luohu districts. There are government sanctioned slaughterhouses are asked to supply these sellers with iced, fresh slaughtered poultry using refrigerated delivery.
Based on the new rules, every slaughtered chicken must have a band on one leg that bears a QR code. Once the code is scanned it should bring up any information ranging from the time and place the poultry was slaughtered and its quarantine certification. But poultry sold in several markets still don’t have leg bands. Pre slaughtered poultry is not popular with local residents and in Dongmen market used to sell 100,000 fresh chickens everyday, but since the ban only 196 slaughtered chickens was sold.
Sellers are sending live poultry to designated slaughterhouses and then transport the slaughtered chickens to the market without any refrigeration, some even saw slaughtered poultry sold in concrete stalls in hot weather. And according to one market manager that the market has 98 booths therefore there is no place for freezers and refrigerators. A wholesale market in Futian also suffers from the same situation in Dongmen market but is scheduled to undergo renovation soon.
