Shenzhen Establishes First Social Work Institute
The Shenzhen Social Work Institute which is the first of its kind in social service in China was established at Shenzhen City College. The new institute is the result of a three year effort and preparation by the Shenzhen Social Workers Association, Shenzhen Innovation Enterprise Social Responsibility Promotion Center and the Shenzhen Charity Foundation.
The institute will be used as a training base for high end professionals in the social service industry and will also serve as a platform for projects for public good. The former president of Shenzhen University Zhang Bigong will be hired to be the president of the new institute. The secretary general of the Shenzhen Social Workers Association Lu Xiaowen is appointed as executive vice president. The chief of the social service division of the public affairs bureau Wang Jinhua said during the unveiling of the institute, that they will be putting all efforts in building the institute into a State level training base.
The institute will offer training courses that cover cooperation mechanism of social service with the city government and social capital. It will also serve as the incubator for social service projects and to train professional social workers. In May this year the city have around 6,000 social workers working at 135 social service agencies and at 500 community work centers. This community services covers elder care, helping those people who are physically challenged, juvenile monitoring, rehabilitation, drug support and legal help.
