Street Artists to Audition for License to Perform in Shenzhen
A two day audition for 260 street artists was held to see if they qualify for a license to perform at the square near the Shenzhen Book City CBD store. The audition made Shenzhen the first city to regulate street artists after being reviewed by expert and the public. Once the applicant is qualified, they will be granted a license and allowed to perform as street artists.
The review for the artists was conducted at the Lianhua Subdistrict office and every applicant in the performing art category is required to give a five minute performance and other applicants in the visual arts and creative handicraft category were given different tests. The panel of experts was composed of celebrities and scholars known in the cultural and art industry and the panel representing the public was composed of representatives from cultural authorities, street artists, local residents and media organizations. Results will be announced in ten working days and no more than 12 licenses will be handed out to the performing category and 60 licenses are available for the visual art and creative handicrafts category.
Street artists will be allowed to perform at designated place and time in the future and only at the square near the Shenzhen Book City CBD store. And just before they perform they need to undergo training sessions regarding the regulations and law, basic etiquette and industry standards.
