Apple New Programs Aims in Reducing Company’s Carbon Footprint
Apple is announcing two new programs that are aimed in reducing the carbon footprint of it manufacturing partners in China. According to Apple the new programs are created to eliminate over 20 million tons of greenhouse gas pollution in the country until 2020. Climate Change is one of the greatest challenges and the time for action is needed. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO said that transition to the new green economy requires ambition, innovation and purpose and Apple believe in leaving the world better and hopes that many other suppliers, partners and other companies will join then in the effort.
Apple will build more than 200 megawatts of solar projects in the eastern, northern an southern regions of China and this will produce solar energy equivalent to the traditional energy that are used by 265,000 Chinese homes in a year. apple also plans to partner up with suppliers in China in installing more than two gigawattts of new clean energy in the following years. Lisa Jackson, the vice president for Apple’s Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives stated that being responsible in protecting the air, water and clean energy are in the heart of Apple’s commitment to China as these projects go beyond its operations in helping suppliers adopt clean renewable energy.
Being part of Apple program, Foxconn Technology, Apple’s product assembler is constructing a 400 megawatts of solar power starting in Henan province by 2018. The CEO and founder of Foxconn Terry Gou said that they are excited to embark in this initiative with Apple and both companies share a vision for driving sustainability and hopes that the renewable energy project serves as a catalyst for efforts in promoting a greener ecosystem in the industry. Apple is also constructing a 40 megawatts of solar projects together with soalr panel maker SunPower Corp in Sichuan province and its already completed. Apple is powering around 100 percent of its operations in China and the US using renewable energy and as of the moment Apple operates 19 corporate offices and 24 retail stores in China.
