A new alternative too conventional transportation for Chinese travelers that needs to travel back to their hometown during the Chinese new year to attend family reunions. Didi the Chinese ride hailing app said that people can car pool home during the upcoming Chinese New Year instead of riding overcrowded trains, buses and airplanes.
Last Thursday, China started selling tickets for trains that are scheduled to leave between January 24 to March 3 next year, a 40 day period known as Chunyun when residents are traveling back home to celebrate the Spring Festival that falls on February. Although authorities are still putting more trains into service during the peak travel season each year, still people can’t get train tickets back home. This year’s Chunyun train service saw around 295 million trips.
Didi’s ride sharing service Hitch will be upgraded to pair traveling needs not only within one city but to cover the whole country, making it possible for drivers to take on others when traveling during the Chinese new year. The inter city hitch service was launched during the seven day National day Holiday in October of this year and has seen trips that reached as far as 2,673 kilometers and lasted 60 hours. Although the ride sharing service might appeal to people taking shorter train trips, Didi said that most inter city trips in October were done within 100 kilometers while another 20 percent were trips ranging from 100 kilometer up to 300 kilometers.
