U.S. and China Officials Taking Steps in Creating Advance Clean Coal Technologies

U.S. and China Officials Taking Steps in Creating Advance Clean Coal TechnologiesChina and U.S. officials are making a major step towards creating and agreement to advance clean coal technologies that will hopefully reduce the fuel’s contribution to climate change and offer a potential lifeline for an industry that is seeing their fortune fade. The agreement between China’s National Energy Administration and the U.S. Department of Energy will allow the two nations to share results as they refine the technologies in capturing the greenhouse gases being produced from burning coal.

U.S. energy department assistant secretary Christopher Smith, said the terms of the deal is already finalized and he together with other senior officials from Obama’s administration met with representatives from China’s National Energy administration during a forum in Billings. The discussions took place near one of the largest coal reserves in the world, the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming as massive strip mines are producing 40 percent of coal that is burned in the United States.

Clean coal technology is expensive and efforts to develop it for commercial use is struggling to gain traction in the United States and some critics are saying that clean coal is impossible and the money being spent on it should be used towards renewable energy instead. China leads in coal use in the world as it produces and consumes around 4 billion tons annually, which is four times as much as the United States.
