Nuclear Power Plays Important Role in China’s Energy Mix
Nuclear power will be playing an important role into the future of China’s energy mix for emission reduction and economic growth as the country is ready to undergo a nuclear power revolution that have a targeted approval rate of six to eight new reactors under the 13th Five Year Plan.
Last year, there were 24 nuclear reactors that are being constructed which is more than a third of the world’s total for this stage. According to Xiaoyong Huang, an author and president of the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, that although there are different understandings to the nuclear constructions in China, it is still essential and necessary for China to choose nuclear power. There area three reasons for China to choose nuclear power, first is that nuclear power is clean energy that can help protect the environment and will reach its targeted emission goal.
Nuclear reactors have also great significance to the energy security and economic growth in China as right now the country is importing huge amounts of oil and gas, compared to other clean energy such as solar, wind, and nuclear energy which is more economic and stable. Plus there is great market potential for nuclear development and help in the promotion of the country’s export of advanced manufacturing equipment. As of the moment around 3 percent of the whole electricity in China comes from nuclear generation, a level which is quite low compared to 16 percent of the world level.
