Shenzhen is an exciting and novel city with a vibrant economy and society. The area was originally a fishing village – in 1979 it was designated by the late Chinese paramount leader Deng Xiaoping to be the first of the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in China. It was formally established in 1979 due to its proximity to Hong Kong. Shenzhen Special Economic Zone was created as experimental ground for the practice of market capitalism within a community guided by the ideals of “socialism with Chinese characteristics”. It has been an exceptional success.
Since its founding, Shenzhen has evolved into a world-class city. The city boasts a bustling downtown area, beautiful green spaces and an emerging cultural scene. Shenzhen continues to develop commercially and as a leading example of a harmonious society. Shenzhener’s are hardworking, can-do, aspirational people. Citizens from all over China, and people from all over the world, come to Shenzhen to create a better future.
