Foreign nationals granted permanent residency in China

Foreign nationals granted permanent residency in China51 foreign nationals received their permanent residence permits or better known as Chinese green cards. 101 foreign expatriates from 26 different countries have applied for green cards since the first expatriate applied for it in 2004.

A 35 year old U.S. citizen was the first applicant for the Chinese green card, and a 62 year old South Korean is the first recipient of the Chinese green card. The cards are renewed every ten years and holders enjoy the same benefits Chinese residents get when looking for work, purchasing property or putting up a business.

Foreign experts that contributed to China’s economic, scientific, social, and technological development or those who also invested over $500,000 in the city can also apply for the cards at any public security bureau. Applications will be submitted to the Ministry of Public Security for examination and approval.

  1. Is this similar to a Hong Kong right of abode where you can still keep your home country’s citizenship or must that be relinquished?
