Record number of couples registered for marriage
The marriage registry offices issued marriage certificates to almost 3,600 couples yesterday, the triple ten day which is a perfect and auspicious day according to chines traditions. A daily average of 100 couples register for marriage in they city. Last year 2,400 couples registered for September 9, 2009 certificates.
Shenzhen civil affairs bureau opened till 8 p.m. with staff reporting for duty at 6 a.m. to make sure to open its office doors to start receiving applications for marriage. 20 volunteers were on hand to help with the registration rush since they were expecting more than 400 couples to register in their office.
Marriage registries were open throughout the country, and in Beijing more than 9,000 couples were registered by 11 a.m with the earliest couple to arrive at 1:30 a.m. just to queue in line. Some couples tried to register online but reservations were full two days after it opened last September 25. Couple were then told to register in person at the nearest registry office.
