Guangzhou Evergrande Takes Championship League Crown
Guangzhou Evergrande finally fulfilled that country’s expectations as Guangzhou ended China’s run without a championship. Held back by a 2-2 tie in Seoul, the Chinese Super League team was able to manage a draw with FC Seoul during the second leg of the Championship League finals to take the crown.
This will be the first Asian title of China in 23 years the team has a dry spell as far as 1990 as the league fans had very little to celebrate in the national and professional levels. The last win they have was during the now defunct Asian Club Champinship. This will also be another title win game for the league’s coach Marcello Lippi, he is also the first coach to win the European and Asian club championships
Several of the Evergrande players has never played in the AFC Champions League final. Guangzhou entered the finals by scoring 14 goals in their previous two rounds after defeating Qatar and the Japanese Kashiwa Reysol in the semis.
Several days before the second leg, Evergrande defeated Wuhan Zall and clinched their third Chinese Super League title and only losing only one game and finished 18 points ahead of Shandong.
