Shenzhen Aims to Become a City of Literature
To be recognized as a city of literature, a city has to meet a number of requirements, this includes quantity, quality, and a diversity of published works. Quantity and quantity of educational programs focused on domestic and foreign literature in the primary, secondary and tertiary level. Existence of libraries, bookstores and private and public cultural centers. To preserve, promote and disseminate domestic and foreign literature.
Shenzhen is vying for the title of City of Literature under the acknowledgement of the Creative Cities Network by the UNESCO. The city literary federation is busy preparing its application under the watchful eyes of the Guangdong provincial and Shenzhen municipal governments. There are also factors that should be taken into consideration such as the resident’s enthusiasm in taking part in literature activities, the vitality of literature creation and its influence on its residents, Shenzhen has a large group of writers in the professional and amateur level. Plus most of the writing done is best examples of contemporary literature in China according to the writers association who is preparing the application.
Although there are mixed reviews on the city’s pursuit of the title, there are a lot of writers in Shenzhen but most of them still needs improvement and Shenzhen provides support to its writers with many winning top national awards.
The city already holds the title of City of Design and still hopes to be a World Book Capital City and City of Piano.
